A direct-fired heater blows air straight across the flame: all the heat it makes stays in the space, but so do the combustion gases and moisture. It suits open or well-ventilated areas.

It is rented to heat a job site in winter, thaw ground or equipment, or keep a space above freezing while concrete or drywall work goes on.

It runs on diesel. Plan for good ventilation: the combustion gases stay in the heated air.
